Finding an address tucked inside a Karachi gali, or guessing which Lahore flyover is open this week, can turn a ten-minute errand into an hour of frustration. Google Maps is free, works across every major Pakistani city, and has several useful features that most people never switch on. Here is how to actually use it — save the places you visit often, download maps for when your signal drops, and get ahead of traffic before it eats your whole afternoon.
Save Your Favourite Places First
Before you worry about routes, spend five minutes saving the places you go to regularly. Search for a location, tap the name card at the bottom, then tap "Save." You can drop it into a ready-made list or make your own — this is far more useful than it sounds once you have ten or fifteen spots saved.
- Save home and office under their own labels so directions are one tap away.
- Create a "Family" list for your parents' house, in-laws, and siblings' homes.
- Save your regular mechanic, tailor, clinic, and pharmacy so you never have to describe the location to a rickshaw or Careem driver again.
- Star a couple of landmark shops or petrol pumps near unfamiliar areas — useful when giving directions over the phone to guests.
Download Offline Maps Before You Travel
Mobile signal in parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Murree during peak season, or even certain Karachi neighbourhoods during load-shedding can be unreliable. Offline maps solve this. Tap your profile photo in the top corner, go to "Offline maps," then "Select your own map," and drag the rectangle over the area you need — a whole city, a stretch of the motorway, or an entire route to Hunza.
- Download over Wi-Fi at home; a city-sized map can run into several hundred MB.
- Offline maps expire after about fifteen days unless you update them, so refresh before a big trip rather than assuming last month's download still works.
- Offline navigation still gives turn-by-turn directions and estimated arrival times, but live traffic data needs an active connection.
- Good routes to pre-download: Islamabad to Naran/Kaghan, Lahore to Multan via the motorway, and any hill-station trip where PTCL towers thin out.
Beat Traffic With Real-Time Data
Turn on the traffic layer (the layers icon, top right) to see roads shaded green, orange, or red based on current congestion. Before leaving, tap "Directions" and use the clock icon to choose "Leave now" or "Depart at" a later time — Maps will show you whether waiting twenty minutes actually saves time, which is often the case on Shahrah-e-Faisal, the Lahore Ring Road, and the Islamabad Expressway during office rush hours.
When multiple routes appear, compare the small time estimates under each one rather than assuming the highlighted blue route is always fastest — sometimes a slightly longer route on smaller roads beats a jammed main artery.
A five-minute check before leaving the house usually saves twenty minutes stuck at a signal — the habit matters more than the app.
Getting Pakistani Addresses Right
Many areas don't have clean, searchable addresses, so leaning on landmarks and shared pins works better than typing an address.
- Instead of dictating an address, drop a pin on the exact spot and share it directly via WhatsApp — this is the fastest way to guide a rider or guest.
- For areas with no formal address at all, Google Maps generates a short "Plus Code" for any location, which you can share the same way as a pin.
- When correcting a wrong location or missing shop, use "Suggest an edit" on the place card — Pakistani map data improves when more people contribute corrections.
