Hepatitis B and C in Pakistan: How the Virus Spreads and How to Protect Your Family

Pakistan has one of the world's highest hepatitis burdens. Here's how B and C actually spread, and practical steps to protect your family.

Hepatitis B and C in Pakistan: How the Virus Spreads and How to Protect Your Family

Pakistan carries one of the heaviest hepatitis B and C burdens anywhere in the world, with tens of millions of people living with chronic infection, many without knowing it. The virus rarely announces itself early — a person can feel completely fine for years while the infection quietly damages the liver. The good news is that both hepatitis B and C are largely preventable, and hepatitis C is now curable in most cases with a short course of tablets. Understanding exactly how these viruses spread is the single most useful thing a family can do to stay safe.

How Hepatitis B and C Actually Spread

Both viruses travel through blood, and hepatitis B can also spread through other body fluids. In Pakistan, the most common routes are not what most families assume — it is rarely about food or water (that is hepatitis A and E instead). The real risks are:

  • Unsafe injections — reused syringes at clinics, dispensers, or "doctors" who give injections for minor fevers or vitamins without opening a fresh, sterile syringe in front of you.
  • Unscreened blood transfusions — always confirm the blood bank tests every unit for HBV, HCV, and HIV before a transfusion for surgery, delivery, or thalassemia care.
  • Barbers and street dentists — razors, blades, and dental tools that are not sterilized between customers.
  • Tattoos, piercings, and cupping (hijama) — safe only if the practitioner uses new, single-use needles and disposable cups for every client.
  • Mother-to-child transmission — hepatitis B in particular can pass from an infected mother to her newborn during delivery unless the baby is vaccinated immediately.
  • Sharing personal items — razors, nail clippers, and toothbrushes can carry trace amounts of infected blood.

Hepatitis B and C do not spread through sharing food, hugging, coughing, or using the same toilet. Fear of casual contact often leads to families isolating infected relatives unnecessarily — this stigma causes real harm and stops people from getting tested.

Practical Prevention Steps for Every Household

  • Insist on a new, sealed disposable syringe for every injection, opened in front of you — this single habit prevents most hepatitis transmission in Pakistan.
  • Get the hepatitis B vaccine for every newborn, ideally within 24 hours of birth, followed by the remaining doses in the routine EPI schedule available free at government vaccination centers.
  • If you are pregnant, ask your doctor for a hepatitis B and C screening early in pregnancy so precautions can be taken at delivery.
  • Choose registered clinics and barbers who visibly use fresh blades or sterilize equipment with an autoclave.
  • Avoid unnecessary drips and injections for common colds or mild fevers — oral medicine is just as effective and carries zero injection risk.
  • Never share razors, toothbrushes, or nail-cutting tools within the household, even with close family.

Get Screened — It's a Simple Blood Test

Hepatitis B and C testing is a routine blood test available at most labs and government hospitals, and many provinces run free or subsidized screening camps. Anyone who has had surgery, a transfusion, dialysis, or an injection at an informal clinic should get tested at least once. Hepatitis C, in particular, has no vaccine but is now cured in the vast majority of patients with a 12-week course of direct-acting antiviral tablets, often available through provincial hepatitis control programs at low or no cost. Hepatitis B cannot always be cured, but it can be controlled for life with medication and regular liver monitoring.

A single new syringe, opened in front of you, costs less than the tea you might order while waiting — and it can be the difference between a healthy liver and a lifelong illness.

When to See a Doctor

  • Yellowing of the eyes or skin, dark urine, or unusual fatigue that doesn't go away.
  • Family history of liver disease or a relative recently diagnosed with hepatitis B or C.
  • Before marriage or pregnancy, as part of routine premarital and prenatal screening.

Roman Urdu

Pakistan mein Hepatitis B aur C ka boojh duniya ke sab se zyada mumalik mein shamil hai. Karoron log is se mutasir hain, aur aksar unhein khud bhi pata nahi hota kyunke virus shuru mein koi zahir alamat nahi deta. Achi baat yeh hai ke yeh dono bachao ke qabil hain, aur Hepatitis C ka ilaj ab chand hafton ki dawai se mumkin hai.

Virus Kaise Phailta Hai

  • Ghar mein razor, nail cutter ya toothbrush share karna

Yaad rahe: yeh virus khana share karne, gale milne ya ek hi toilet istemal karne se nahi phailta — is ghalat fehmi ki wajah se mutasir logon ko bila wajah alag kar diya jata hai, jo galat hai.

Apne Ghar Ko Mehfooz Rakhne Ke Tareeqay

  • Har injection ke liye nayi, seal syringe apni aankhon ke samne khulwayein
  • Naye paida hone wale bachay ko 24 ghanton ke andar Hepatitis B ka teeka lagwayein, phir EPI schedule mukammal karein
  • Hamil khawateen shuru mein hi Hepatitis B aur C ka test karwayein
  • Registered clinic aur barber chunein jo saaf, sterilize tools istemal karte hon
  • Mamooli bukhar ya zukaam ke liye bila zaroorat drip ya injection na lagwayein
Aapki aankhon ke samne khuli hui ek nayi syringe ki qeemat chai ke cup se zyada nahi — magar yeh farq aapke jigar ki zindagi bhar ki sehat aur bimari ke darmiyan ho sakta hai.

Test Zaroor Karwayein

Hepatitis B aur C ka test aam khoon ka test hai jo har lab aur government hospital mein mojood hai. Jin logon ki surgery, transfusion, dialysis ya kisi ghair mustanad clinic se injection hui ho, unhein kam az kam ek baar test zaroor karwana chahiye. Peeliya, ankhon ka pilapan, ya bila wajah thakan mehsoos ho to foran doctor se raabta karein.
