If a handset isn't registered with the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority's Device Identification, Registration and Blocking System (DIRBS), it can have its mobile network access blocked, sometimes weeks or months after you've already paid for it and started using it. The good news is that checking a phone's status takes less than two minutes, and it's a habit worth building before you hand over any money.
What PTA Approval Actually Means
Every mobile phone has a unique 15-digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number, which identifies the specific device on cellular networks. Under PTA's regulations, any phone used with a Pakistani SIM must have its IMEI registered in DIRBS, either because it was manufactured/imported through proper commercial channels, or because the owner personally registered it (this applies to phones brought in from abroad by travelers or overseas Pakistanis). If the IMEI isn't in the system, the network operators are instructed to block calls and mobile data on that device after a set compliance window, even though WiFi and other non-cellular functions keep working.
Step-by-Step: Checking Your IMEI on DIRBS
- Find your IMEI. Dial *#06# on the phone, or check Settings → About Phone. On the box or receipt, it's usually printed as a barcode number too — compare it against the phone itself, since sellers sometimes hand over the wrong box.
- Visit the DIRBS portal. Go to dirbs.pta.gov.pk and choose the IMEI verification / check option.
- Enter the 15-digit IMEI exactly as shown, with no spaces or dashes, and submit.
- Read the result carefully. The system will typically return one of three outcomes: compliant/approved (already registered, safe to use), non-compliant/blocked (needs registration or is already blocked), or "not found," which usually means it needs registration before first use.
- Alternative method via SMS. If you don't have reliable internet at the point of sale, PTA also allows checking status by sending the IMEI number in a text message to 8484 — useful for a quick check in a crowded market or bazaar before you commit to a purchase.
Before You Buy: A Practical Checklist
- Always check the IMEI before paying, not after — especially for second-hand phones sold through Facebook Marketplace, OLX, or local shops.
- For phones bought locally from an authorized dealer, ask for the original purchase receipt; PTA-compliant retailers should be selling registered stock.
- For phones brought from abroad, know that PTA allows one device per passport to be registered at a discounted/duty-adjusted rate within 60 days of arrival, and additional devices at full duty. Keep your travel documents and boarding pass, since these are typically needed for the registration process.
- Be cautious with phones that seem unusually cheap for their model — an unregistered or "PTA not approved" phone is often priced lower precisely because the seller is passing the registration cost (and risk) onto you.
What to Do If Your Phone Isn't Approved
If the DIRBS check shows your phone is non-compliant, don't panic — in most cases it can still be registered, provided it wasn't reported lost, stolen, or blocked for other reasons.
