Preparing Your Home for Winter: Staying Warm on a Budget

Practical, low-cost ways for Pakistani homes to draft-proof, layer smartly, and use gas heaters safely this winter.

Preparing Your Home for Winter: Staying Warm on a Budget

Winters in Lahore, Islamabad, Karachi's cooler nights, and especially the hills of Murree, Swat, or Quetta can catch households off guard every year. Gas load-shedding, rising cylinder prices, and old, draughty houses make heating expensive — but most of the heat loss in a typical Pakistani home has nothing to do with how big your heater is. It comes down to gaps, habits, and safety shortcuts. Here is a practical, budget-first plan to keep your home warm without burning through your salary or risking a gas leak.

Draft-Proofing: The Cheapest Warmth You'll Ever Buy

Before you spend a single rupee on a heater, seal the gaps. A drafty room can lose more heat through cracks than through the walls themselves.

  • Door and window gaps: Roll up an old towel or stitch a simple fabric "draft snake" filled with rice or sawdust and place it along the bottom of doors and windows. This is the single most effective free fix.
  • Foam weather-stripping tape: Available cheaply at any hardware store (bijli/hardware wala) — stick it around window frames and door edges where you feel air moving.
  • Curtains matter more than you think: Heavy, floor-length curtains on windows and even doorways (especially to unheated corridors or stairwells) trap warm air in the room. Close them as soon as it gets dark.
  • Check the exhaust fan and AC unit: Bathroom exhaust fans and window AC units are major cold-air entry points in winter. Cover the AC with a proper outdoor cover or plastic sheet, and use an exhaust fan flap or cloth plug when not in use.
  • Rooftop and boundary wall gaps: If you have access to the roof, check the parapet wall and any water tank openings — cold air sinks and seeps into stairwells from open rooftop doors.
  • Rugs and carpets: Marble and tile floors, common in Pakistani homes, pull heat out of a room fast. A simple cotton dhurrie or rug underfoot makes a noticeable difference and costs far less than extra heating.

Layering: Dress the Room, Not Just Yourself

Layering isn't only about sweaters — it's a whole-house strategy that cuts your heating bill.

  • Layer your own clothing first: A thermal vest under your kameez or shirt traps more warmth than one thick sweater, and lets you keep the heater on a lower setting.
  • Close off unused rooms: Heating an entire house is wasteful. Shut doors to guest rooms or storage areas and concentrate warmth in the room your family actually uses in the evening.
  • Layer your bedding: A thin cotton sheet, then a razai (quilt), works better than one heavy blanket because trapped air layers insulate more efficiently. Sun-dry razais on clear days to keep the filling fluffy and warm.
  • Use a hot water bottle: Filling one before bed and slipping it under the razai lets you turn the room heater off overnight — a genuine safety and savings win.

Gas Heater Safety: Non-Negotiable Rules

Every winter, Pakistani news reports carbon monoxide poisoning deaths linked to gas heaters used in sealed rooms — this is entirely preventable.

  • Never sleep with a gas heater running in a closed room. Carbon monoxide (CO) is odourless and builds up quickly with no ventilation. Turn the heater off before sleeping, every single time.
  • Keep a window or vent slightly open whenever a gas heater is running, even during the day. A small gap is enough for airflow and drastically lowers CO risk.
  • Buy a CO detector if you can. They are inexpensive relative to the risk and give an early alarm long before symptoms like drowsiness or headache set in.
  • Get the rubber pipe and regulator checked annually. Cracked or perished gas pipes are a common cause of leaks and fires — replace them at the first sign of wear rather than waiting.
  • Never use an outdoor/BBQ-style gas or coal heater indoors. These produce far more CO than heaters designed for indoor use.
  • Keep heaters away from curtains, bedding, and clothes drying nearby — a leading cause of house fires in winter.
A warm home this winter isn't about a bigger heater — it's about a sealed room, sensible layers, and a gas heater you respect enough to switch off before you sleep.

For general safety guidance on gas appliances and carbon monoxide, Pakistan's Sui Northern Gas Pipelines (SNGPL) and Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) both publish seasonal safety advisories worth checking each year before the cold sets in.

Roman Urdu

Pakistan mein sardiyon ke mausam mein ghar ko garam rakhna mehenga lag sakta hai, lekin asal masla bara heater na hona nahi, balke ghar ke chhote chhote gaps aur galat aadatein hoti hain. Yahan kuch asaan aur kam kharch waale tareeqe hain jo har ghar mein kaam aa saktay hain.

Layering: Sirf apne kapdon mein layering na karein — poore ghar mein bhi karein. Ek thermal vest kameez ke neeche pehnein, yeh ek moti sweater se zyada garmi deta hai. Jo kamre use nahi ho rahe unke darwaze band rakhein taake garmi sirf zaroori kamre mein rahe. Razai ke neeche ek patli chaadar bhi lagayein — do layers ek moti razai se behtar kaam karti hain. Hot water bottle bhi ek acha tareeqa hai jis se raat ko heater band karke bhi neend mein garmi rehti hai.

Gas heater safety — yeh sabse zaroori hai: Kabhi bhi band kamre mein gas heater chalate hue na soyein — carbon monoxide gas be-boo hoti hai aur khamoshi se jaan le sakti hai. Heater chalate waqt khirki ya vent thoda khula rakhein. Agar mumkin ho to CO detector kharidein. Gas pipe aur regulator har saal check karwayein, purani ya phati hui pipe foran badal dein. Heater ko curtains ya kapdon se door rakhein taake aag lagne ka khatra na ho. Yeh chhoti chhoti ehtiyaat aapke ghar walon ki jaan bacha sakti hain.
