If you're a Pakistani living and working abroad, you've probably wondered whether there's a proper, official way to save and invest back home without flying in, standing in bank queues, or trusting a "cousin's friend" to handle your money. The Roshan Digital Account (RDA) was built for exactly this problem. Launched by the State Bank of Pakistan in September 2020, it lets overseas Pakistanis and people of Pakistani origin open a fully functional Pakistani bank account remotely, then use it to save in rupees or foreign currency, invest in government securities, buy stocks, or even finance a home or car — all from wherever they live.
What an RDA Actually Offers
An RDA isn't a single product; it's an umbrella account that unlocks several things at once:
- Two account types — an NRP-Rupee Value Account (PKR) or an NRP-Foreign Currency Value Account (USD, GBP, EUR, AED, CAD, AUD, or SAR, depending on the bank).
- Full repatriability — money you bring in through an RDA, along with any profit earned on it, can legally be sent back abroad without special permissions. This is the single biggest difference from a regular resident account.
- Remote account opening — no branch visit, no local guarantor, no physical signature required for most banks.
- A gateway to investment products — once the account is live, you can move straight into government debt instruments, the stock exchange, or real estate schemes from the same portal.
Who Is Eligible and What You Need
- Non-Resident Pakistanis (NRPs) holding a Pakistani passport (with or without a valid visa/residency abroad), or
- Foreign nationals of Pakistani origin holding a Pakistan Origin Card (POC) or National ICT Number (NICOP).
- A valid international mobile number and email address for verification.
- Scanned copies of your passport, POC/NICOP (if applicable), and proof of foreign address or employment.
- An existing foreign bank account, since initial funding typically comes through a wire transfer from your overseas bank.
How to Open One, Step by Step
- Pick a partner bank — most major Pakistani banks (HBL, UBL, MCB, Bank Alfalah, Meezan, Standard Chartered Pakistan, Faysal Bank, Allied Bank, and others) offer RDA on their websites or apps.
- Fill the online application form with your CNIC/passport, POC/NICOP, and contact details.
- Upload the required documents and complete video/biometric verification where the bank requests it.
- Once approved, you'll get account details by email — usually within a few working days.
- Fund the account via wire transfer from your personal foreign bank account (third-party transfers are generally not accepted).
Where You Can Put the Money
This is where RDA becomes more than just a savings account:
- Naya Pakistan Certificates (NPCs) — term deposit-style certificates in PKR or USD with tenures from a few months to several years; rates move with SBP policy, so check current numbers before committing.
- Government securities — Treasury Bills, Pakistan Investment Bonds (PIBs), and Sukuk, bought directly through your RDA.
- Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) — RDA holders can open a linked brokerage account and trade listed equities.
- Roshan Apni Chhat — a housing finance scheme to build or buy a home in Pakistan.
- Roshan Apni Car — auto financing for vehicles purchased in Pakistan.
- Roshan Samaaji Khidmat — a channel for directing charitable giving to vetted welfare organisations.
The real value of an RDA isn't the interest rate on any single product — it's that your money stays fully repatriable while it earns, which is the reassurance most overseas Pakistanis have never had with a local account before.
Before You Apply
- Compare profit rates and service charges across two or three partner banks before committing — they aren't identical.
- Confirm current NPC and T-Bill rates directly with your bank or on the State Bank of Pakistan website, since these are revised periodically.
- Keep your foreign address and contact details updated with the bank to avoid delays in future transactions.
- Read the early-encashment terms on NPCs carefully — breaking a certificate before maturity usually means a lower profit rate.
Roman Urdu
Agar aap bahar mulk mein rehtay aur kaam kartay hain, to Roshan Digital Account (RDA) aap ke liye hi banaya gaya hai. Yeh State Bank of Pakistan ka scheme hai jo overseas Pakistanis aur Pakistani origin walon ko bina Pakistan aaye, online bank account kholne deta hai — PKR ya foreign currency (USD, GBP, EUR waghera) mein.
Sab se bari khoobi yeh hai ke is account ka paisa aur us par jo bhi profit ho, dono wapis bahar bheje ja saktay hain, kisi khaas ijazat ke baghair. Account kholne ke liye aap ko apna Pakistani passport, POC ya NICOP (agar foreign national hain), aur apna foreign address/mobile number chahiye hoga. Zyada tar bara banks — jaise HBL, UBL, Meezan, Bank Alfalah, MCB — apni website ya app se yeh account online khol detay hain, aur funding aap ke apne foreign bank account se wire transfer ke zariye hoti hai.
Ek baar account ban jaye to aap ka paisa kai jaghon par laga saktay hain: Naya Pakistan Certificates (fixed profit ke saath, PKR ya dollar mein), government ke T-Bills aur Sukuk, Pakistan Stock Exchange mein shares, ya phir Roshan Apni Chhat se ghar aur Roshan Apni Car se gaari ke liye financing. Sadqa/khairat wale kaam ke liye Roshan Samaaji Khidmat bhi mojood hai.
Apply karne se pehle do teen banks ke profit rates aur charges compare kar lein, kyun ke har bank ke rates alag hotay hain. Current rates hamesha apne bank ya State Bank of Pakistan ki site se check kar lein, kyun ke yeh waqtan faqtan badaltay rehtay hain. Aur agar Naya Pakistan Certificate lein to maturity se pehle nikalne ki shart zaroor parh lein, kyun ke early nikalne par profit kam mil sakta hai. Yeh account un logon ke liye best hai jo Pakistan mein bachat karna chahtay hain lekin apna paisa har waqt apne control mein aur wapis nikalne layak rakhna chahtay hain.
