How to Receive Remittances from Abroad Cheaply and Safely

Compare bank transfers, exchange companies, and mobile wallets to receive family remittances in Pakistan with lower fees and less risk.

How to Receive Remittances from Abroad Cheaply and Safely

For millions of Pakistani households, money sent home by a father, brother, or son working in Dubai, Riyadh, London, or Doha is not extra income — it is the household budget. Yet many families lose a meaningful slice of that money to poor exchange rates, hidden fees, or unsafe collection methods they never questioned. Choosing the right channel, and knowing what to check every time, can put thousands of extra rupees in your hand every month without your relative abroad sending a single dollar more.

Compare Channels Before You Commit to One

Not all remittance channels cost the same, even when they advertise "free transfer." The real cost is usually hidden in the exchange rate, not the fee line.

  • Bank-to-bank transfer (SWIFT): Reliable and traceable, but often the slowest (2-5 working days) and usually gives the weakest exchange rate plus a flat fee on both ends.
  • Formal exchange companies and money transfer operators such as Western Union, MoneyGram, or Ria: fast (minutes to hours), widely available at branches across Pakistan, but compare their quoted rate against the actual interbank rate — the gap is where they earn.
  • Digital remittance apps (Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, Xoom): typically the cheapest for smaller, regular amounts, with transparent fee breakdowns shown before you confirm, and direct deposit into a Pakistani bank account or mobile wallet.
  • Mobile wallet delivery (JazzCash, Easypaisa): convenient if the receiving family doesn't have a bank branch nearby, with instant crediting, but confirm the sender's service actually partners with that wallet before relying on it.

A useful habit: before your relative sends money, both of you check the mid-market rate on a source like XE.com and compare it to what the transfer service is quoting. A difference of even 2-3% on a large transfer adds up over a year.

Use the Roshan Digital Account Route If It Fits

Overseas Pakistanis can open a Roshan Digital Account with a Pakistani bank directly from abroad, without visiting a branch in person. Funds sent through this route settle in a genuine Pakistani bank account, are eligible for competitive conversion rates, and let the family withdraw through normal banking channels or ATM. If your relative sends money regularly, ask them to look into this option through the State Bank of Pakistan's official RDA information page — it is designed specifically to formalize and cheapen remittance flows.

Protect Yourself from Common Remittance Scams

Fraud around remittances usually targets the person receiving money in Pakistan, not the sender abroad, because scammers know families are anxious to collect funds quickly.

  • Never share the transfer reference/MTCN number, CNIC photo, or OTP code with anyone claiming to "verify" your transfer over the phone — legitimate agents never need your OTP read aloud to them.
  • Confirm any "your transfer is stuck, pay a release fee" call directly with the sender before paying anything — this is one of the most common remittance scams in Pakistan.
  • Collect cash payouts only from officially licensed exchange company branches, never from an individual "agent" who meets you outside a shop.
  • Keep a screenshot or printed slip of every transaction until the money is confirmed credited.
A remittance is only truly "received" once it lands in an account or wallet you control — not when someone tells you over the phone that it has arrived.

Build a Simple Routine With Your Relative Abroad

Families that lose the least money over time usually agree on a fixed process rather than picking whichever service looks convenient that month.

  • Pick one or two trusted channels together and stick with them so both sides learn the typical fees and timing.
  • Ask the sender to always share the transaction/reference number the same day, through a channel you both already use.
  • If receiving into a bank account, set up SMS/app alerts so credits are confirmed automatically, not by word of mouth.
  • Review the exchange rate you actually received every few months and compare it against at least one alternative service — providers change their margins over time.

Roman Urdu

Bahar se paisa bhejna aur usay theek tareeqay se wasool karna dono zaroori hain — warna aap ki mehnat ki kamai kharch ya kam exchange rate mein zaya ho sakti hai. Sabse pehle, sirf ek channel pe bharosa na karein. Bank transfer (SWIFT) reliable hai magar slow aur rate usually kamzor hota hai. Western Union, MoneyGram jaisi exchange companies fast hain lekin unka diya gaya rate hamesha interbank rate se check karein. Digital apps jaise Wise ya Remitly chhote regular transfers ke liye aksar sab se sasti hoti hain, aur fees pehle hi saaf dikhati hain. JazzCash ya Easypaisa mein seedha wallet pe paisa mangwana bhi convenient hai agar bank branch door ho — lekin pehle confirm kar lein ke sender ki service us wallet ke sath partner karti hai.

Agar aap ka rishtedar regular paisa bhejta hai, to unhein Roshan Digital Account ke bare mein batayein — yeh State Bank of Pakistan ka scheme hai jo overseas Pakistanis ko bina branch visit kiye Pakistani bank account kholne deta hai, aur is se paisa formal, safe aur behtar rate par aata hai.

Fraud se bachne ke liye kabhi bhi apna MTCN number, CNIC photo, ya OTP kisi ko phone par na batayein jo "verification" ke bahane maange — asal agents ko kabhi zaroorat nahi hoti. Agar koi call kare ke "transfer atak gaya hai, release fee bhejo," to seedha apne rishtedar se confirm karein pehle. Cash sirf licensed exchange branch se hi collect karein, kisi bhi agent se bahar mil kar nahi.

Aakhir mein, apne rishtedar ke sath ek fixed routine banayein — same channel istemal karein, transaction number turant share karein, aur bank/wallet alerts on rakhein taake paisa aane ki confirmation sirf zabani baat par nirbhar na ho. Har chand mahine baad apna liya hua exchange rate check karte rahein taake pata chale koi behtar option to nahi aa gaya.
