How to Prepare for a Job Interview: Questions, Answers and Confidence

A practical guide for first-time job seekers in Pakistan: common questions, the STAR method, and calming pre-interview nerves.

How to Prepare for a Job Interview: Questions, Answers and Confidence

Your first job interview can feel like the biggest test of your life — bigger than any exam, because there is no answer key to memorise. The good news is that interviews follow patterns. Once you understand what interviewers are actually listening for, you can prepare in a way that feels less like guessing and more like practice. Whether you are a fresh graduate applying through Rozee.pk or walking into a bank branch in Lahore for a teller role, the fundamentals below apply the same way.

The Questions You Will Almost Certainly Be Asked

Most interviews — whether for a BPO job in Karachi, a teaching position in Islamabad, or an internship at a multinational — draw from a small pool of recurring questions. Prepare short, honest answers (60-90 seconds each) for these:

  • "Tell me about yourself." Do not repeat your CV line by line. Give a 3-part answer: your background/education, one or two relevant strengths or experiences, and why you are interested in this role.
  • "Why do you want to work here?" Interviewers can tell within seconds if you looked at their website or not. Mention one specific thing about the company — a product, a value, a recent project.
  • "What are your strengths and weaknesses?" Pick a real weakness (not "I work too hard") and pair it with what you are doing to improve it. For example: "I used to struggle with public speaking, so I joined my university's debating society."
  • "Where do you see yourself in five years?" Show ambition that fits the company's growth path, not a completely unrelated dream job.
  • "Why should we hire you?" Connect your skills directly to the job description — this is your chance to summarise your pitch.
  • "Do you have any questions for us?" Always have two or three ready. Asking about training, team structure, or growth opportunities shows genuine interest.

Use the STAR Method for Behavioural Questions

When an interviewer asks "Tell me about a time you faced a difficult situation" or "Give an example of when you worked in a team," they are testing how you think and act, not just what you know. The STAR method keeps your answer structured instead of rambling:

  • Situation — briefly set the scene (one or two sentences).
  • Task — explain what you needed to achieve or what problem you faced.
  • Action — describe exactly what you did, using "I" rather than "we."
  • Result — share the outcome, ideally with a number or clear result (marks improved, event succeeded, complaint resolved).

Example: if asked about handling a group project conflict in university, describe the disagreement (Situation), what the assignment required (Task), how you proposed a compromise and divided work fairly (Action), and that the project was submitted on time and scored well (Result). Write down three or four STAR stories from your studies, internships, or even family businesses before the interview — you can reuse them for different questions.

Handling Nerves Before and During the Interview

Nervousness before your first interview is completely normal — even experienced professionals feel it. What matters is managing it so it does not control you.

  • Prepare the night before, not the morning of. Lay out your clothes, print extra copies of your CV, and confirm the exact address and route.
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early, no earlier. Sitting in a reception area for 45 minutes builds anxiety rather than reducing it.
  • Breathe slowly before you walk in — four seconds in, four seconds out, a few times. This calms your heart rate more effectively than trying to "think positive."
  • Pause before answering. A two-second pause to think looks composed; rushing to fill silence often makes answers weaker.
  • Reframe the interview as a two-way conversation. You are also evaluating whether this company suits you — this shifts the power balance in your mind.
Confidence in an interview rarely comes from having no nerves at all — it comes from having prepared answers so well that the nerves stop mattering.

Final Preparation Checklist

  • Research the company: what they do, their main products or services, and any recent news.
  • Re-read the job description and match your skills to at least three requirements.
  • Prepare and rehearse (out loud, not just in your head) answers to the common questions above.
  • Prepare 2-3 STAR stories covering teamwork, a challenge, and a leadership moment.
  • Prepare two or three thoughtful questions to ask the interviewer.
  • Dress appropriately for the industry — formal for banks and corporate offices, smart-casual for many startups.

Roman Urdu

Pehla job interview kisi bhi bande ke liye stressful hota hai — lekin achi baat ye hai ke interviews mein aksar wahi sawalat repeat hote hain, is liye tayari mumkin hai.

Aam sawalat: "Apne baare mein bataiye" ka jawab CV dobara parhne ki bajaye teen hisson mein dein — background, strengths, aur ye role kyun chahiye. "Aap yahan kyun kaam karna chahte hain" ke liye company ke baare mein kam az kam ek specific cheez zaroor mention karein. "Apni kamzori bataiye" mein koi asli kamzori batayein aur sath ye bhi batayein ke aap usay improve karne ke liye kya kar rahe hain.

Company ke baare mein research karein, job description parh kar apni skills match karein, aur zaroor practice karein bolkar, sirf zehan mein nahi.
