How to Politely Ask for a Salary Raise (and Get It)

Timing, evidence and word-for-word scripts to help Pakistani professionals ask for an increment with confidence.

How to Politely Ask for a Salary Raise (and Get It)

Asking for a raise makes most people uncomfortable, especially in Pakistani offices where talking directly about money can feel awkward or even disrespectful toward a senior. But an increment is not a favour — it is a normal part of a working relationship, and there are ways to ask for one that are both polite and effective. The difference between getting a "yes" and getting an awkward silence usually comes down to three things: when you ask, what proof you bring, and how you phrase the request.

Pick the Right Moment

Timing affects outcomes more than most employees realise. Asking at the wrong moment — say, right after the company missed a target, or in the middle of a stressful project deadline — makes even a well-deserved request feel like bad timing.

  • After a visible win: Ask shortly after you closed a big client, hit a target, or finished a project that was noticed by management.
  • Around appraisal season: Most companies in Pakistan review salaries once a year, often around the fiscal year-end (June) or after Eid bonuses are settled. Know your company's cycle and time your ask a few weeks before it.
  • Avoid crunch periods: Don't ask during layoffs, right after a bad quarter, or when your manager is visibly overloaded.
  • Book a proper slot: Don't ambush your boss in the corridor or over a WhatsApp text. Request a short one-on-one meeting so the conversation gets full attention.

Build Your Evidence File

Managers respond to numbers and specifics, not general claims like "I work very hard." Before the meeting, prepare a short, honest record of your contribution.

  • List concrete achievements: Projects completed, targets exceeded, processes you improved, money saved or earned for the company.
  • Track scope creep: If you're now doing tasks beyond your original job description — managing juniors, handling clients directly, covering for a vacant role — write it down.
  • Check the market rate: Look at what similar roles pay in Pakistan right now using resources like Glassdoor or Rozee.pk salary insights, so your ask is grounded in reality, not guesswork.
  • Get a number in mind: Decide on a realistic range (for example 15-25%) rather than a vague "a bit more." A specific number signals preparation.

Scripts You Can Actually Use

You don't need dramatic speeches — a calm, respectful, and specific request works best. Here are a few openings you can adapt:

  • Requesting the meeting: "Sir/Ma'am, when you have some time this week, I'd like to sit with you for 15-20 minutes to discuss my role and compensation."
  • Opening the conversation: "Over the past year I've taken on [X, Y, Z] and delivered [specific result]. Based on that, I wanted to discuss adjusting my salary to better reflect my current contribution."
  • If they ask for a number: "Based on my research and my current responsibilities, I was thinking somewhere around [X]. I'm open to discussing what makes sense."
  • If they say not now: "I understand. Could we agree on a timeline to revisit this, and what would you like to see from me in the meantime?"
A raise conversation is not a confrontation — it is a business discussion between two people who both want the company, and your career within it, to do well.

What to Do If the Answer Is No

Not every request succeeds immediately, and that's normal. Ask specifically what would need to change for a "yes" next time, and get it in writing if possible, even just in an email summary. If a raise truly isn't possible right now, ask about non-cash options: extra leave, a flexible work arrangement, training budget, or a clear promotion path. And if the same "not now" repeats for years without a real plan, it may be a signal to explore what your skills are worth elsewhere.

Roman Urdu

Salary barhane ki baat karna aksar mushkil lagta hai, khaas kar Pakistani offices mein jahan paison par khullam khulla baat karna thora ajeeb samjha jata hai. Lekin increment maangna koi ehsaan nahi, ye normal professional cheez hai. Farq sirf itna hai ke aap kis waqt, kaunsi proof ke saath, aur kis tareeqe se baat karte hain.

Sahi Waqt Chunain

Apni baat tab rakhein jab aap ne koi bara kaam successfully complete kiya ho ya target hasil kiya ho. Company ke appraisal cycle ka pata rakhein — aksar Pakistan mein financial year-end (June) ke ariras yeh hota hai. Layoffs ya kisi bure quarter ke foran baad baat na karein, aur boss ko corridor ya WhatsApp par na pakrein — proper meeting request karein.

Sabooti Taiyar Karein

Apne achievements ki list banayein — kaunse projects complete kiye, kitna target cross kiya, company ka kitna faida hua ya paisa bacha. Agar aap apni asal job se zyada kaam kar rahe hain (juniors ko handle karna, clients khud dekhna), wo bhi likh lein. Market rate check karein taake aap ka number reality par based ho, sirf andaza na ho.

Kya Kahein

Seedha, adab se, aur specific baat karein: "Sir/Ma'am, is hafte kabhi waqt milay to mujhe apne role aur salary par 15-20 minute baat karni thi." Phir apni achievements bata kar number discuss karein. Agar jawab "abhi nahi" ho, to poochein ke kya change hona chahiye aur kab dobara baat ho sakti hai — aur agar mumkin ho to email mein likh lein.

Agar Jawab Na Ho

Har baar seedha "haan" nahi milta, aur ye normal hai. Non-cash options bhi poochein — extra leave, flexible hours, training budget, ya promotion ka clear raasta. Agar baar baar sirf "abhi nahi" milta rahe bina kisi plan ke, to apni skills ki market value dekhna bhi ek acha idea hai.
