Chevening Scholarship: How Pakistanis Can Study in the UK for Free

A practical guide for Pakistani applicants to the Chevening Scholarship: eligibility, the four essays, and interview tips.

Chevening Scholarship: How Pakistanis Can Study in the UK for Free

Every year, hundreds of Pakistanis get a fully funded one-year master's degree in the UK through the Chevening Scholarship, a programme run by the UK government's Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It covers tuition, monthly living costs, return flights, and even a visa application fee. No connections, no wealthy sponsor, no elite university background required — just a strong application. Here is what actually matters if you are applying from Pakistan.

Who Can Apply

Chevening's eligibility rules are strict and non-negotiable, so check every box before you invest time in the essays.

  • You must be a Pakistani citizen (or otherwise eligible) and return to Pakistan for a minimum of two years after your award ends — this is a genuine legal undertaking, not a formality.
  • You need at least two years (around 2,800 hours) of work experience by the application deadline. Internships, part-time work, and volunteering can count if you can show consistent hours.
  • You must have an undergraduate degree that would meet the UK's equivalent of a 2:1 honours degree — for most Pakistani universities this generally means a strong CGPA, so check your specific university's grading against Chevening's country-specific guidance if you're unsure.
  • You must apply to three different eligible UK university courses through the separate UCAS or direct university process, and receive at least one unconditional offer by the July deadline of the following year.
  • You cannot have already studied in the UK on a government scholarship in the last five years, and there are restrictions on current UK degree holders.

The Four Essays

This is where most Pakistani applicants lose marks — not because their English is weak, but because they write vague, generic answers instead of specific, evidence-based ones. Each essay has a strict word limit (usually 500 words) and is scored separately.

  • Leadership and influence: Do not just say you led a team. Describe one specific situation, the obstacle you faced, the action you took, and the measurable outcome. A small, well-documented example from your workplace beats a vague claim about "always being a leader."
  • Networking: Chevening wants to see you can build and use professional relationships, not just attend events. Talk about a real connection you built and what came of it — a project, a partnership, a piece of advice that changed your work.
  • Studying in the UK: This is not "why the UK is a great country." Name the specific course, specific modules, and specific faculty or research strengths at your chosen university, and connect them directly to a skills gap you have identified in yourself.
  • Career plan: Explain what you will do immediately after returning to Pakistan, and where you see yourself five years later. Chevening is funding impact in Pakistan, not a stepping stone to settle abroad — make your return plan concrete, with a real sector, employer type, or venture in mind.
Reviewers read thousands of essays a year. The applicants who get shortlisted are the ones who answer with one real story and real numbers, not the ones who use the most impressive-sounding words.

Interview Preparation

If shortlisted, you will face a panel interview, usually at the British High Commission or via video call, roughly 45 minutes with prep time included.

  • Know your own essays cold. Panels frequently ask you to expand on the exact examples you wrote about, and inconsistency between your written answer and your spoken answer is an instant red flag.
  • Prepare a tight, two-minute personal pitch that covers your background, your chosen course, and your return plan — you will likely be asked some version of "tell us about yourself" first.
  • Expect a direct question on why you will not stay in the UK after your studies. Answer with specifics about the Pakistani job market, sector, or organisation you plan to return to — not just patriotism in the abstract.
  • Do a mock interview with a friend or mentor at least three times before the real one. Chevening alumni groups on Facebook and LinkedIn often run free mock sessions for Pakistani applicants each cycle — search for "Chevening Pakistan" alumni pages closer to interview season.

Timeline to Keep in Mind

  • Applications typically open in early August and close in early November for the following year's intake.
  • University applications and unconditional offers are usually due by mid-July of the following year, so start your UCAS or direct university applications as soon as you submit your Chevening application, not after.
  • Interviews for shortlisted Pakistani candidates typically happen between February and March.

Roman Urdu

Chevening Scholarship UK government ki taraf se di jati hai aur Pakistani students ke liye ek genuine free opportunity hai — poori tuition fee, rehne ka kharcha, flights, aur visa fee tak cover hoti hai. Na koi sifarish chahiye, na paisa — bas application strong honi chahiye.

Eligibility: Pakistani citizen hona zaroori hai, aur scholarship khatam hone ke baad kam az kam do saal wapas Pakistan mein rehna hoga — ye legal commitment hai, sirf formality nahi. Kam az kam do saal ka work experience chahiye (internships aur part-time kaam bhi count ho sakta hai agar hours consistent hon). Undergraduate degree UK ke 2:1 standard ke barabar honi chahiye, is liye apni university ki grading Chevening ki guidance se check kar lein. Application ke sath sath teen alag UK universities mein bhi apply karna hoga aur July deadline tak kam az kam ek unconditional offer lena hoga.

Chaar Essays: Zyada tar Pakistani applicants generic jawab likhte hain jo select nahi hote. Har essay mein ek specific, real example do — vague baatein nahi. Leadership essay mein ek particular situation batayein jahan aap ne koi masla hal kiya. Networking essay mein ek real connection aur uska result batayein. UK mein study karne wale essay mein apni exact course aur university ka naam le kar batayein ke wo aapki specific skill gap kaise pori karegi. Career plan essay mein batayein ke Pakistan wapas aa kar aap exactly kya karenge — koi vague jawab nahi.

Interview ki taiyari: Apne essays acchi tarah yaad rakhein kyunke panel unhi par sawal karega. Apne bare mein do minute ka concise pitch tayyar karein. "Aap UK mein kyun nahi rahenge" jaisa sawal zaroor aayega — iska jawab specific plan ke sath dein, sirf jazbati baaton se nahi. Interview se pehle kam az kam teen baar mock interview zaroor karein, Chevening Pakistan alumni groups is mein madad karte hain.

Timeline: Application August mein khulti hai aur November mein band ho jati hai. University offers July tak chahiye hoti hain, is liye Chevening application ke sath hi university applications bhi shuru kar dein. Interviews February-March mein hote hain.
