'Log Kya Kahenge': How to Stop Letting People's Opinions Control Your Life

A practical guide for young Pakistanis on breaking free from "log kya kahenge" anxiety and building a life on your own terms.

'Log Kya Kahenge': How to Stop Letting People's Opinions Control Your Life

Three words have probably shaped more life decisions in Pakistani households than any exam result or job offer: "log kya kahenge" — what will people say. It decides which subject you study, who you marry, what career you chase, and sometimes whether you chase anything at all. The fear isn't irrational — in a tightly networked, collectivist culture, reputation genuinely affects your family's standing, your marriage prospects, even business relationships. But there is a real difference between respecting your community and being paralyzed by it. This post is about finding that line, and about building a life you actually want without declaring war on your relatives to do it.

Why "Log Kya Kahenge" Has So Much Power Over You

Understanding the mechanism weakens it. A few reasons this fear runs so deep:

  • Collectivist wiring. In individualist cultures, your choices are "yours." In ours, your choices reflect on your parents, your siblings' rishtas, and your family's izzat. This isn't a personal flaw — it's how the social system is built.
  • The vagueness trap. "Log" is never a specific person. It's an imagined, faceless jury. You can't argue with a jury that has no name — which is exactly why it feels so powerful and is, in practice, so easy to defeat once you notice it.
  • Availability bias. You remember the one aunty who commented on your career choice for years. You forget the fifty people who never said a word, or the ones who quietly respected you for it.
  • Confusing judgment with consequence. A raised eyebrow at a wedding is not the same as losing your job or your safety. Most "log kya kahenge" fears are about discomfort, not actual danger — but the brain reacts to both the same way.

The Filter: Whose Opinion Actually Deserves a Vote

You don't need to stop caring what anyone thinks — that's neither possible nor healthy. You need a filter for whose opinion earns a say in your decisions.

  • Skin in the game. Will this person be there to help you if the decision goes wrong? If not, their opinion is commentary, not counsel.
  • Track record. Has this person's advice historically been right about your life, or do they say the same cautious thing to everyone regardless of the situation?
  • Consistency. Would they still say this if it were their own child, or is the standard only applied to you?

Parents, a mentor, a spouse, a close sibling — these usually pass the filter and deserve real conversation, not dismissal. A distant relative's WhatsApp forward about your life choices does not.

You will spend your entire life inside other people's opinions of you if you let their comfort outrank your responsibility for your own future.

Practical Moves for When the Pressure Is Real

  • Separate the decision from the announcement. You don't owe anyone a press release. Many young Pakistanis stall for months seeking approval before even starting something they're free to simply begin quietly.
  • Bring receipts, not emotion. If you're pushing back on family expectations about a career or course change, a plan with numbers, timelines, and a backup option lands better than "just trust me."
  • Let results do the talking. Criticism about an unconventional path softens fast once there's income, stability, or visible progress attached to it. Give it time before treating early objections as final verdicts.
  • Find your counter-crowd. Seek out even two or three people — online communities, a mentor, a coworker — who've made a similar choice. It breaks the illusion that "everyone" disapproves.
  • Practice the boring response. A calm "this is what's working for me right now" repeated without defensiveness ends most interrogations faster than a passionate justification does.

What This Isn't

This isn't a license to be reckless, disrespectful, or to burn bridges with people who genuinely love you. Cutting off your family or humiliating elders to "prove independence" usually isn't courage — it's overcorrection, and it tends to cost more than it saves. The goal is discernment: keep the people whose care is real, quiet the noise that isn't, and stop outsourcing decisions about your one life to people who won't live it with you.

Roman Urdu

"Log kya kahenge" — yeh teen lafzon ne shayad kisi bhi exam ya job offer se zyada Pakistani gharon mein faislay control kiye hain. Yeh dar bilkul be-bunyad nahi — humara society connected hai aur izzat ka asar sach mein family aur rishton par parta hai. Lekin community ka ehtaram karna aur uske dar mein zindagi guzarna do alag cheezein hain.

Yeh Dar Itna Mazboot Kyun Hai

"Log" kabhi koi specific insaan nahi hota — ek bina chehre ka anjaan jury hota hai jisse aap bahes nahi kar sakte. Aap sirf uss ek aunty ko yaad rakhte hain jisne comment kiya, un pachaas logon ko nahi jinhon ne kuch nahi kaha. Aur ek bhaunh uthana kabhi job ya safety khonay jaisa nahi hota — dimagh dono ko barabar samajhta hai, lekin haqeeqat mein farq bohat bada hai.

Kis Ki Raye Vote Deserve Karti Hai

  • Kya yeh insan galat faisle ki soorat mein aapke saath khara hoga?
  • Kya iski salah pehle sahi sabit hui hai, ya yeh har kisi ko wahi ehtiyati baat kehta hai?
  • Kya yeh standard sirf aap par lagaya ja raha hai, ya apne bachon par bhi wahi lagaya jaata?

Waldain, mentor, close family — inki baat sunein. Door ke rishtedaar ka WhatsApp forward — nazar-andaaz karein.

Agar aap doosron ke comfort ko apni zimmedari se upar rakhenge, to poori zindagi unki rai ke qaid mein guzar jayegi.

Practical Tareeqe

  • Faisla lena aur uska elaan karna do alag cheezein hain — har cheez ka press release zaroori nahi.
  • Emotion ki jagah plan aur numbers se baat karein.
  • Natije bolne dein — kaamyabi dikhte hi tanqeed khud kam ho jaati hai.
  • Aisay do-teen log dhoondein jinhon ne wahi rasta chuna — yeh ehsaas khatam hota hai ke "sab" khilaf hain.

Yeh sab bagawat ya rishtay todne ka license nahi hai — jo log sach mein khayal rakhte hain unhe sunein, baaqi shor ko chhod dein, aur apni ek zindagi ke faisle unhein na saunpein jo yeh zindagi aapke saath nahi jiyenge.
