There is a particular kind of tiredness that has nothing to do with sleep. You wake up, you go through the motions of your day — college, job, family responsibilities, WhatsApp messages — and yet something feels missing. You are not in crisis, exactly, but you are not sure why you are doing what you are doing anymore. If this sounds familiar, you are not broken and you are not alone. Feeling lost is often not a sign that something has gone wrong with your life; it is usually a sign that you have outgrown an old version of your goals and haven't yet named the new ones. The way out is rarely a single dramatic decision. It is a series of honest questions, asked patiently, that slowly bring your direction back into focus.
Start With Where the Energy Goes
Purpose is not usually discovered through abstract thinking alone — it shows up in patterns you already have, if you pay attention to them.
- What activities make you lose track of time? Not what you think should excite you, but what actually has, even in small doses — teaching a cousin, fixing something broken, writing, organizing an event, listening to someone's problems.
- What do people already come to you for? Purpose often hides inside skills you've stopped noticing because they come naturally to you.
- When was the last time you felt proud of yourself? Not praised by others — proud, on your own terms. What were you doing?
- What would you do for a year if money and family opinion were not a factor? This question is not about being unrealistic; it is about removing noise so you can see your actual preferences underneath the pressure.
Question the Comparison Trap
A huge amount of feeling "lost" in Pakistan today is actually feeling behind — behind a cousin who went abroad, a classmate with a government job, a friend who got married and "settled." This comparison is often the real source of the fog, not an actual absence of direction.
- Ask yourself: is this "lost" feeling mine, or is it borrowed from someone else's timeline?
- Separate what I want from what will stop people from talking. Both are valid concerns in our culture, but only one of them will sustain you at 2am when no one is watching.
- Write down three people whose paths you admire, then ask honestly: do you want their life, or do you want the respect their life gets them? These are very different problems with very different solutions.
Shrink the Question Until It's Answerable
"What is my purpose in life?" is too large a question to answer sitting still — it paralyzes almost everyone. Smaller questions move you instead.
- What is one problem in my family, mohalla, or field that genuinely bothers me?
- What could I learn in the next 90 days that would make next year's options wider than this year's?
- If I had to be useful to someone else this week, who would it be and how?
- What is a version of "success" that I could actually sustain for ten years without burning out?
Purpose reveals itself through action far more often than through contemplation. Pick the smallest honest next step and take it — a short course, a conversation, a volunteer afternoon — and let the feedback from actually doing something correct your direction, rather than waiting for total clarity before you move.
"He who has a why to live can bear almost any how." — Friedrich Nietzsche (popularized by Viktor Frankl in Man's Search for Meaning)
Protect the Search Itself
Feeling lost becomes dangerous only when it turns into isolation or despair rather than reflection. A few practical guardrails:
- Talk to at least one person you trust about how you're actually feeling — not a curated version. Silence makes the fog thicker.
- Limit how much time you spend on social media comparing your unfinished chapter to everyone else's highlight reel.
- Give yourself a real deadline for reflection (a month, not a year) after which you commit to one small direction and test it, rather than staying stuck in endless "finding yourself" mode.
- If the low feeling is constant, heavy, and doesn't lift with reflection or rest, that may be more than direction-seeking — it's worth speaking to a counselor or doctor rather than pushing through alone.
Purpose is rarely a lightning bolt. For most people it is a slow accumulation of small yeses to the right things and small no's to the things that were never really theirs. Ask better questions, act on the smallest honest answer, and trust that clarity comes from movement, not from waiting.
Roman Urdu
Kabhi kabhi zindagi mein aisa waqt aata hai jab sab kuch chal raha hota hai — college, job, ghar ki zimmedariyan — lekin dil mein ek khalapan sa rehta hai. Agar aap aise feel kar rahe hain, to yeh koi kharabi nahi hai. Iska matlab sirf itna hai ke purani manzil ab aapke liye kaafi nahi rahi, aur nayi manzil abhi tak clear nahi hui.
Dekhein Energy Kahan Jaati Hai
Apne aap se poochein: kis kaam mein waqt guzarne ka pata hi nahi chalta? Log kis cheez ke liye aapke paas aate hain? Aakhri baar khud par fakhar kab mehsoos hua tha — logon ki tareef se nahi, apni nazar mein? Agar paisa aur log kya kahenge yeh factor na hota, to aap ek saal kya karna chahte?
Comparison Ka Jaal Pehchanein
Pakistan mein "lost" feel karne ki ek badi wajah yeh hoti hai ke hum apne aap ko doosron se peeche samajhte hain — jo cousin bahar chala gaya, jis dost ki naukri lag gayi, jo shadi ho gayi. Apne aap se saaf poochein: yeh khalapan mera apna hai, ya kisi aur ki timeline se udhaar liya hua hai? Jin logon ki zindagi aapko pasand hai, sochein — aapko unki zindagi chahiye ya sirf woh izzat jo unhein milti hai? Dono alag masle hain.
Bada Sawal Chhota Karein
"Meri zindagi ka maqsad kya hai" jaisa sawal bohat bada hai aur aksar insaan ko rok deta hai. Chhote sawal poochein: mere ghar ya mohalle mein koi masla jo mujhe pareshan karta hai? Agle teen mahine mein kya seekh sakta hoon jo mera raasta khol de? Maqsad sochne se nahi, chhote kadam uthane se saamne aata hai — koi short course, koi baat cheet, koi madad ka mauka.
Talaash Ko Mehfooz Rakhein
Kisi bhroseman insaan se apni asli feelings share karein — khamoshi is dhund ko aur ghana kar deti hai. Social media par comparison kam karein. Apne aap ko sochne ke liye ek mahine ki hadd dein, phir ek chhota qadam utha kar test karein. Aur agar yeh udaasi lagataar bhari rehti hai aur aaram ya soch se kam nahi hoti, to yeh sirf "raasta dhoondhna" nahi ho sakta — kisi counselor ya doctor se baat karna behtar hoga. Maqsad aksar ek dum se nahi milta, yeh chhote sahi faislon se dheere dheere ban'ta hai.
